Why did i decide to become a health coach?
MY STORY
The idea to become a holistic health and wellness coach feels like it came from thin air but in all honesty, the seeds were planted years and years ago. When I began my practice of yoga and mindfulness in 2017, I started to pay close attention to how I was treating my body and what I was consuming on and off the plate. I decided to post the journey of my yoga practice and healthy eats and quickly learned how much I enjoyed doing so. My posts sparked a lot of curiosity and people asked lots of questions about what I was doing and how they can do it too! At the time, I was working at a hotel when I thought, “Can I make this passion for yoga into a job??” Although it took a few years to complete my 200hr teacher training, it was finally done and I love professionally sharing my practice and passion.
About a year and a half into teaching yoga, I felt like I had more to offer this world, especially because working in the service industry as a full-time barista just wasn’t as fulfilling as I once thought it would be. How else could I continue sharing my passion with the world while making money? This is where some extensive research came in. I knew I loved nutrition and sharing what I knew with curious minds, but I wasn’t looking to go back to school to become a registered nutritionist. This is how I found the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, or, IIN, and learned that I could become a Health and Wellness Coach in 6 months! That sounded more like my style and speed.
WHAT IS A HEALTH COACH?
As defined by the IIN website, “Health and Wellness Coaches are wellness experts and mentors who help others feel their best through personalized diet and lifestyle changes. Health Coaches work with clients to help them discover the best wellness routines and empower them to meet their unique health goals.” A health coach is also someone who can bridge the gap between a doctor or specialist’s orders, and the patient. So often in the conventional healthcare system, the doctor prescribes a change and their patient’s lifestyle, and the patient ignores it because they have no further information other than, “You need to eat less sugar and workout more.” Okay, so… how does one do that? Where do they begin? Does this resonate with you? Also, did you know that doctors know almost nothing about nutrition? It’s not a requirement when studying to become a doctor. Hiring a health coach is the perfect way to go if you know you want or need to make lifestyle changes but don’t know where to begin, and need accountability and consistency.
We are all complex and bio-individual beings. We all need and deserve and unique approach to our health. My work as a health coach is to be the listening ear for my clients and truly hear the stories they tell. From there, we work together as a team to create a sustainable plan for the client to reach their health and wellness goals. After all, you are your best doctor, I’m here to cheer you on as you grow.
WHAT’S NEXT?
I believe that food is medicine. Many factors contribute to this belief of mine. Not only can food provide us with the strength and nutrients we need that keep us healthy and happy, but food has the power to heal and connect us all.
The Universe lets me know every day that I am aligned with my truth and my purpose. The work I am meant to do here while living on this Earth and having this human experience is to teach. To share with the world how important and special it is to take care of the only body you get while you live this life. You only get one. One body and one life.
